Fanning was promoted to a full contract in 2022-23, after starting with Western Australia as a rookie in 2021-22. The classy left-hander scored more runs (867 at 51) than any player during the 2021-22 Alcohol.Think Again Premier Cricket First Grade competition, belting four centuries and a half-century while maintaining the impressive strike rate of 71.2. Considered a top-order prospect in red ball cricket, Fanning is equally capable of scoring quickly in the shorter forms of the game.

Fanning made his Sheffield Shield debut at the beginning at of the 2022-23 domestic season against New South Wales at the WACA Ground and has since gone to appear nine times for his adopted state in the red-ball format.

Plying his trade as an opener, Fanning has found a more consistent role at the top of the order in 2024-25, appearing in WA's last four Shield matches prior to the Christmas break.

He impressed in his maiden appearance of the 2024-25 summer against Tasmania in Hobart, scoring his second career half-century (68) as WA ran out winners by an innings and 45 runs.

Fanning was impressive in WA's innings win against Queensland in February, top-scoring with a vital 95 as WA surged to their third victory of the campaign.

Fanning also showed his talents for Perth Scorchers during BBL|14, striking at an impressive 142 during his three innings.
