Squad named as new Shield era commences

WA has selected a squad of 13 players for the encounter, commencing on Thursday 8 October at the WACA Ground, which heralds the beginning of a new era for the side.

After being unveiled as WA’s new Sheffield Shield captain in May, Aaron Hardie will take the reins under match conditions for the first time, while it will also be Beau Casson’s first Sheffield Shield match as Head Coach.

As he has done in recent seasons, Hardie is set to form an important part of WA’s middle order, alongside the likes of powerful veteran Hilton Cartwright and wicketkeeper Joel Curtis.

It’s set to be a mix of youth and experience at the top of the order for WA, with the composure of Cameron Bancroft likely to be joined by classy left-handed duo Sam Fanning and Jayden Goodwin.

The hosts will be spoilt for choice when it comes to what bowling to take into the match, naming six quicks and spinner Corey Rocchiccioli in the squad.

Fresh from playing in Australia A’s drawn match with India A in India last week, Jhye Richardson is set to lead the strong pace attack.

After being limited to three matches last season, economical left-armer Joel Paris is a welcome return to WA’s squad.

Speedsters Brody Couch, Liam Haskett and Albert Esterhuysen are also in the mix, with the latter looking to play his first Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground.

Kieran Elliott rounds out the squad, as he looks to play his first Sheffield Shield match for WA since moving from Tasmania during the winter.

As was the case for the opening two matches of the One-Day Cup last month, WA will be without Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, who are in Australia’s Test squad for the three-Test series against South Africa starting on Friday.

Following the Sheffield Shield clash, scheduled to finish on Sunday 11 October, the two sides will meet in a One-Day Cup match at the same venue on Tuesday 13 October.
