WA Cricket is mourning the loss of former Western Australian cricketer Barbara Groves, who passed away peacefully on Sunday 19 January, aged 97.
Vale Barbara Groves
Groves commitment to the game of cricket shone through during her time playing for Western Australia, after becoming the 38th woman to play for the state when she debuted during the 1949-50 season.
A highly capable allrounder, Groves represented WA in three Australian Women’s Cricket Carnivals and was renowned for her ability to contribute with both bat and ball. She scored a personal-best 48 against Victoria shortly after making her debut, while her 2-30 against the same opposition two years later was her best with ball in hand.
A talented sportswoman, Groves also represented WA in softball.
Once her playing days ended, Groves spent much of her life as a volunteer ambulance officer with St John Ambulance service.
Not only did Groves spend time as a volunteer, she also held the position of Chairwoman of the Tambellup sub-centre for nearly a decade before moving to Katanning and serving as a phone operator.
In May 2016, Groves was awarded the Order of St John Medal, which recognises her dedication to the organisation over a long period of time.
Barbara was the beloved sister to Paul (dec), sister-in-law to Helen and loving Aunty to Vicki, Lyndy and Family.
The WACA Board, WA Cricket Management, staff and players extend their deepest sympathies to the Groves family.
