Junior stars shine in Country Week

42 Junior teams took part in the decades-old competition, battling in warm conditions across Perth to earn bragging rights over their country counterparts.

Country Week is the biggest cricket carnival in the State and has been running since 1907 with clubs and associations from all regions always excited to be involved.

The coveted 16A Section was taken out by Bunbury & Districts Junior Cricket Association, after going through the tournament with only the one defeat.

Bunbury also had the top two wicket-takers (Ben Lincoln – 11 wickets at 9.18 and William Lloyd 10 at 4.9) as they fended off the previously undefeated Albany & Districts in a hard-fought Final at the Murdoch University on Friday 10 January.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Albany were bowled out for 170 on the last delivery of their 50 overs, with number four Dash Germinario pacing the innings with a well-crafted 59.

In reply, Bunbury’s batters reached the 171-run target with ease, reaching the total with 34 balls and six wickets in hand. Bunbury opener Flynn Fazey top-scored with 55, before middle-order contributions from Corbyn Knox (30), Benjamin Lincoln (31*) and Jaxon Magennis (33*) saw Bunbury complete the chase in emphatic style.

Lincoln’s knock completed a fine allround performance, with the 15-year-old also taking 4-39 off his 10 overs with the ball.

Meanwhile, Peel Country showed their strength across multiple age groups, taking out the 14C and 16B Black age groups.

Busselton Margaret River Junior Cricket Association, Wellington District Cricket Association, Northam Junior Cricket Association, Warren Blackwood Cricket Association were also successful each winning a competing age group across the week.

Senior Men’s Country Week begins on Sunday 19 January, with 41 teams set to compete. The A Section Final will be played at the WACA Ground on Friday 24 January, starting at 10am.
