Mount Lawley District Cricket Club great and former WACA Board Member Peter Lawrence Murphy has been rewarded for his significant contribution to the game with WA Cricket Honorary Life Membership.
Mount Lawley Great Earns Honorary Life Membership
Mr Murphy was formally recognised at the WA Cricket’s 2024 Annual General Meeting after more than five decades’ involvement with the game.
His most telling contributions came during a 27-year tenure as Mount Lawley’s president, during which Mr Murphy made significant improvements to Breckler Park and the Club. These included:
- Removing the overlap between the two wickets at Breckler Park;
- Bringing curator management of all turf facilities in-house;
- Securing refurbishments of the clubrooms and changerooms, as well as an extension in 2016;
- Negotiating with the City of Stirling to upgrade the centre-wicket and turf training blocks, which are now among the best in WA;
- A restructure of the Club’s management committee, relieving pressure from volunteers and assisting in the recruitment of new volunteers; and
- Securing a large digital scoreboard, now broadly viewed as one of the best in Premier Cricket.
The Club’s WA District Cricket Council delegate from 1999, he served on the Council for 10 years, later becoming its Chairperson and nominated WACA Board member between 2003 and 2009.
On field, Mr Murphy enjoyed a decorated 194-game career across all grades, tallying 4,069 runs with the high score of 182no, and taking 162 wickets with best figures of 8-60, having first joined Mount Lawley in 1970.
He also captained Mount Lawley’s Colts, Second Grade and Third Grade teams in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, skippering three premierships.
