Hong Kong team set to embark on Bunbury
The visit will be marked by a series of T20 matches against local teams, providing an exciting opportunity for sports enthusiasts in Bunbury.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Andy Cottam, the Hong Kong Women's Cricket Team, comprising 13 talented players, will arrive in Bunbury on Wednesday 10 January and stay until Thursday 25 January.
The team's visit is not only focused on cricket but also aims to foster cultural exchanges and create lasting memories in Bunbury.
Highlights of the team’s trip include five T20 matches, challenging the local Bunbury Districts Cricket Association women’s team, an U18s Pathways women’s team, and engaging in a practice match against the Mayor’s 11 on Sunday 14 January at 2pm at Bunbury Recreation Ground. The public is encouraged to attend this match.
As part of their stay, the team will also explore the cultural richness of Bunbury, visiting popular attractions such as the Bunbury Wildlife Park and the Dolphin Discovery Centre. They will also utilise the City of Bunbury owned and operated Southwest Sports Centre as a recovery and training base.
WA Cricket has a proud connection with Bunbury, a region that has produced many first-class cricketers over the years, including current WA player Jayden Goodwin, Sheffield Shield skipper Sam Whiteman and current WA Women’s captain Chloe Piparo.
Goodwin is having a breakout summer at Shield level, playing five of the six Shield matches so far this season. He has produced some vital contributions, including a match-winning 47 not out against South Australia to guide WA home in a tense fourth-innings run chase.
Whiteman has been a pillar of strength in the top order for WA over many seasons and has compiled another solid run-making campaign, tallying 331 runs at 36.77 in nine innings to date, including a marathon knock of 188 in a Player of the Match performance against Tasmania in October.
His white-ball form in the Marsh One-Day Cup has been equally impressive, with his 367 runs at 122.33 in five innings currently placing him atop of the leading run-scorers in the competition.
Coming in at number four, He struck his maiden ODC century (137) against South Australia at the WACA Ground in November, to lead his side to a thrilling four-wicket final-over victory.
Whiteman has also returned to the Perth Scorchers in the BBL this summer, after spending the last two seasons with the Sydney Thunder.
Meanwhile, WA Women’s skipper Piparo is having another standout summer with the bat in Women’s National Cricket League, striking 368 runs at 92 to lead her team to five wins from their first six matches.
She has produced three fifties and a century in her six innings, including 104 against WNCL powerhouses South Australia.
